Nicosia municipality deploys drones to combat mosquito populations

The Municipality of Nicosia has officially integrated drone technology into its public health strategy to combat and eliminate mosquito breeding sites. Announced on September 21, 2026, by Mayor Charalambos Prountzos, this initiative aims to reach areas that are difficult to access using conventional ground-based methods. The implementation of aerial technology represents a significant shift in the city's approach to municipal maintenance and sanitation, prioritizing innovation in urban management.

Following the initial rollout, the municipality confirmed that drone operations will soon expand to the Kateva stream in Pallouriotissa and other high-risk zones. This development follows recent, ongoing efforts by municipal teams to control mosquito populations, which include daily spraying operations—even on weekends—utilizing authorized chemical preparations. Recent documented interventions have focused on areas such as Engomi, including locations near the Lakatameia border, the Agios Dometios cemetery, the State Fair grounds, and along the open canal on Iroon Street.

Authorities continue to monitor and evaluate potential breeding grounds throughout the city. The use of drones is expected to provide more efficient coverage, ensuring that neglected or inaccessible spots are treated, thereby enhancing the overall effectiveness of the mosquito control program.
