Cyprus strengthens defense cooperation and interoperability

Cypriot Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas announced significant efforts to modernize the National Guard, specifically targeting the renewal of armored equipment following recent upgrades to the national air defense system. During recent interviews, Palmas highlighted the enhanced interoperability between the air defense systems of Cyprus, Greece, and Israel. While clarifying that the "Achilles Shield" agreement is a bilateral pact between Athens and Jerusalem, the Minister noted that all three nations share common defense technologies, which contributes positively to regional security.

Palmas also emphasized that relations between Cyprus and the United States are currently at an all-time high, supported by joint military training exercises that provide the National Guard with valuable NATO-standard experience. Plans are underway to begin upgrades to the Andreas Papandreou airbase in the spring of 2026, based on specifications provided by American experts. Furthermore, the Defense Minister is scheduled to travel to Egypt alongside his Greek counterpart to discuss deepening trilateral defense ties. Additionally, the public has been invited to view an upgraded military parade scheduled for October 1, reflecting the ongoing modernization of the armed forces.
