Air traffic controllers report safety concerns over Nicosia FIR

Air traffic controllers in the Republic of Cyprus have expressed grave concerns regarding flight safety within the Nicosia Flight Information Region (FIR) as of September 21, 2026. The union claims that intensified Turkish interventions in the airspace are disrupting normal operations and violating international aviation standards.

Giorgos Georgiou, president of the Pancyprian Union of Air Traffic Controllers, stated that the Air Traffic Control Center is currently understaffed, employing only 90 controllers against a required capacity of 140. This significant shortfall is placing immense pressure on the system, leading to operational fatigue and delays. Georgiou urged the Cypriot government to exert greater diplomatic pressure through European and international bodies to ensure Turkey adheres to air navigation regulations.

To address these systemic issues, the union has renewed its proposal to establish a state-run air navigation company. Proponents argue that this transition would expedite the hiring and training of new staff, facilitate the modernization of infrastructure, and minimize flight delays. There is no immediate resolution to these staffing shortages or the geopolitical tensions mentioned, with the union continuing to call for structural reform and stronger international intervention.
