Granit Xhaka investigated for fraudulent Covid-19 vaccination certificate

Swiss national team captain and Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka is facing criminal proceedings initiated by the Lucerne Public Prosecutor's Office. The investigation centers on allegations that Xhaka obtained a fraudulent Covid-19 vaccination certificate during the pandemic. The case originated from a wider probe into a Lucerne medical practice suspected of issuing fake vaccination documentation without administering actual doses.

Following initial reports from the Swiss newspaper Blick, Xhaka publicly admitted to purchasing the forged document, attributing his actions to fear and uncertainty regarding the vaccine at that time. He has expressed regret for his decision, acknowledging it was a mistake and stating his intent to cooperate fully with the authorities. While he faces a potential prison sentence of up to five years, legal experts suggest a fine of approximately 10,500 euros is the more probable outcome. The athlete is scheduled to appear before the prosecutor in early October to address the charges and conclude the formal inquiry.
