Eurostat report highlights Cyprus's unique demographic and economic growth

According to the Eurostat report 'Key figures on Europe – 2026', Cyprus displays a distinct demographic and economic trajectory compared to the rest of Southern Europe. As of January 1, 2025, the country had a population of approximately 983,000 residents, reflecting a 34% increase between 2005 and 2025—the third-largest growth in the European Union. In 2025 alone, Cyprus recorded a population growth rate of 13.7 per 1,000 inhabitants, ranking second in the EU after Malta.

Demographic performance remains robust, with the highest crude birth rate in the EU at 10.0 live births per 1,000 people and a low crude death rate of 6.9 per 1,000 in 2024. This resulted in a natural growth rate of 3.1 per 1,000, trailing only Ireland. Economically, the nation has maintained growth above the EU average, supported by low unemployment and a strong service and tourism sector. Despite these successes, the country faces systemic challenges regarding research, energy dependency, and the need for economic diversification as it transitions into a new phase of development.
