Cypriot citizenship data for Turkish Cypriots released

According to data from the Ministry of Interior released on September 21, 2026, a total of 5,176 citizenships of the Republic of Cyprus have been granted to Turkish Cypriots since 2004. This statistical overview highlights the progression of citizenship approvals through various legislative and policy periods over the last two decades.

The distribution of these citizenships reflects significant historical shifts in policy: 2,972 were granted between 2004 and February 2007, prior to the establishment of formal criteria. Following the introduction of the first official criteria by the Council of Ministers on February 14, 2007, 1,806 citizenships were granted through 2013. A period of lower activity occurred between 2014 and 2023, with only 67 approvals. Since the implementation of revised criteria on February 2, 2024, 331 citizenships have been granted. These approvals are largely processed under Article 109(1) of the Civil Registry Law, which governs cases involving children of mixed marriages and individuals with foreign parents, requiring specific Council of Ministers approval based on the parent's citizenship status and entry conditions.
