Erdogan demands recognition of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus at UN General Assembly
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan utilized his address at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on September 22, 2026, to officially call upon the international community to recognize the independence of the self-proclaimed Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Erdogan demanded the termination of what he termed the "inhumane isolation" of Turkish Cypriots, insisting on international diplomatic, political, and economic engagement with the secessionist entity. He further proposed a regional conference regarding the Eastern Mediterranean to foster common ground.
Following his speech, Erdogan held a meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss the Cyprus issue, alongside regional conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. Reports indicate a hardening of Ankara's stance, as the Turkish president reiterated his rejection of any framework that fails to secure "sovereign equality" and a two-state solution. Meanwhile, Tufan Erhurman, the Turkish Cypriot leader, is scheduled to visit New York on September 23 for separate meetings with Guterres and UN envoy Maria Angela Holguin to discuss the future of the 5+1 negotiations.
During his UN address, Erdogan also launched a sharp verbal attack against Israel regarding the conflict in Gaza, prompting the Israeli delegation, led by Ambassador Danny Danon, to walk out of the hall. The exchange highlights the significant diplomatic tensions surrounding Turkey's foreign policy objectives and its approach to the Cyprus dispute.
