Preparations underway for resumption of Great Sea Interconnector project

Athens and Paris have reached an advanced stage in planning the resumption of the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project, which aims to provide an electrical link between Greece and Cyprus. Following the acquisition of a 66% majority stake by the French investment group Meridiam in August 2026, the project is moving forward with technical leadership provided by Greece's Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO/ADMIE).

As part of the renewed efforts, a French-flagged vessel is scheduled to conduct essential seabed surveys for the cable installation. A formal communiqué detailing the vessel's route, operational areas, and duration will be sent to coastal states, including Turkey. The authorities have clarified that while Turkey will be officially notified of the survey activities, including those in non-delimited maritime regions, it will not be asked for permission to proceed with the research.
