Tensions rise over Cyprus solution ahead of UN General Assembly

As leaders prepare for the United Nations General Assembly in New York, diplomatic tensions have escalated between the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish Cypriot administration. Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis recently called for a modern European state free of “anachronistic guarantees and occupying armies,” a statement that drew sharp criticism from the Turkish Cypriot “foreign ministry.” The Turkish side reaffirmed its stance that Turkey's military presence is essential for security and explicitly rejected the idea of abolishing these guarantees.

Simultaneously, Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman is traveling to New York for his third meeting in 11 months with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and envoy Maria Angela Holguin. Erhurman emphasized that any future negotiations must be “guaranteed for success” and prioritized progress on confidence-building measures, such as border crossing initiatives, demining, and irregular migration management, followed by methodology and substantive issues. Meanwhile, the political party AKEL condemned Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan’s recent appeal at the UN for the international recognition of the “TRNC,” arguing that such rhetoric violates UN Security Council resolutions and complicates the prospects for resuming negotiations from the point where they stalled in 2017.
