DISY leadership discusses presidential race as Mavroyiannis considers candidacy

The political landscape in Cyprus is shifting as both the Democratic Rally (DISY) and opposition figure Andreas Mavroyiannis prepare for the 2028 presidential elections. Following a high-level meeting at DISY’s Pindarou headquarters, the party leadership has urged its president, Annita Demetriou, to declare her interest in the party’s nomination. While Demetriou has not made a final, official announcement, she confirmed her interest is under consideration and is expected to clarify her position by mid-October. The leadership aims to conclude the candidate selection process by the end of 2026, with primary elections possible by late November or December if consensus cannot be reached.

Meanwhile, Andreas Mavroyiannis expressed that he is highly likely to run for the presidency again, contingent upon the support of AKEL and the broader Left. He noted that recent polls and ongoing consultations have encouraged his potential bid, though he has not reached a definitive conclusion. DISY’s internal deliberations are currently balanced against the critical period of UN General Assembly meetings in New York, with the party leadership agreeing to delay public procedures to avoid distractions from potential developments regarding the Cyprus problem. Other figures, including Averof Neofytou and Giorgos Pamporidis, have also shown interest in the DISY nomination, setting the stage for complex internal negotiations.
