Cyprus parliamentary committee reviews funding for traffic camera system upgrade

On Monday, the House Finance Committee in Cyprus reviewed a request to release €146,000 for an upgrade to the 'Photo Radar List' traffic camera system. The proposed software update is intended to enable the police to serve approximately 16,000 outstanding out-of-court fines to Turkish Cypriot vehicle owners at crossing points. The committee members raised several questions regarding the technical and operational justifications for the project, leading to a decision to postpone the vote until a subsequent session where representatives from the Ministry of Transport will be present to provide further details.

During the session, AKEL Member of Parliament Andreas Pasiourtides expressed skepticism regarding the government's urgency, arguing that officials must first demonstrate that all existing contractual and legislative options for serving these fines have been exhausted. He emphasized that the legislature would not automatically endorse revenue-focused policies without proper justification. The outcome remains pending as the committee awaits additional evidence regarding the effectiveness of current efforts by the police and the contracted firm to manage these outstanding penalties.
