Cyprus parliament proposes stricter regulations for e-scooters

The Parliament of Cyprus has begun reviewing two legislative proposals aimed at curbing the rising number of accidents involving personal mobility devices, including e-scooters. On September 17, lawmakers Dimitris Souglis and Chrysanthos Savvidis submitted bills to the House Plenary following a concerning surge in traffic incidents, which this year resulted in nine accidents, including two fatalities and four serious injuries.

The proposed legislation seeks to introduce systemic oversight to urban micro-mobility. Specifically, the bill introduced by Dimitris Souglis proposes a mandatory registration system for these devices and the issuance of identification markers. Simultaneously, Chrysanthos Savvidis has proposed a legislative ban on the use of such devices by individuals under the age of 17. Both proposals have been referred to the Parliamentary Committee on Transport for further deliberation and debate.
