Espionage allegations against Hungarian delegation in Brussels

A new investigation has surfaced regarding an espionage network allegedly operating within the Permanent Representation of Hungary to the European Union in Brussels. According to reports from the European Commission and Greek media, Hungarian intelligence officers used diplomatic cover to approach Hungarian nationals working for the European Commission to extract sensitive information relevant to the interests of the Hungarian government.

While Politico reports that the original investigation into these activities concluded in 2017, new evidence has recently emerged, bringing the case back into the spotlight. German Member of the European Parliament Daniel Freund stated in an interview with ERTnews that while there is no direct evidence proving that Prime Minister Viktor Orban personally ordered the operation, he considers it implausible that the delegation acted without central government knowledge. Freund emphasized that an EU ambassador is typically a close associate of the Prime Minister, making it nearly impossible for such an intelligence operation to occur without high-level authorization.

The surfacing of these details has sparked renewed scrutiny over the conduct of Hungarian officials within European institutions. No specific future legal proceedings have been announced, but the ongoing discussion highlights continued tensions between EU entities and the Hungarian representation regarding diplomatic conduct and transparency.
