CFA concludes investigation into VAR incident during APOEL vs. AEL match

The Cyprus Football Association (KOP) has concluded its investigation into a contentious VAR incident during the sixth round match between APOEL and AEL. While the association confirmed that the final disciplinary decision—the expulsion of the player Kafu—was correct under the Laws of the Game, the Refereeing Committee identified procedural irregularities regarding how the incident was brought to the attention of the VAR team.

Following the investigation, which was led by committee chairman Antonio Damato, the federation announced that it would impose sanctions where applicable. Furthermore, officials confirmed plans to implement new operational measures to ensure full compliance with FIFA and IFAB protocols and prevent similar procedural lapses in the future. Meanwhile, the KOP has also addressed broader concerns regarding officiating, with spokesperson Konstantinos Siamboullis noting that while some errors occurred, public criticism has been disproportionate, and the possibility of utilizing foreign VAR officials is being considered.

The federation also confirmed the resignation of Dimitris Grigoris, while continuing preparations for the national team's upcoming schedule. Addressing separate controversies, the KOP dismissed criticism regarding national team selections, stating that roster decisions are based solely on tactical criteria.
