Cyprus completes new state-owned petroleum storage terminal

In late June 2026, Cyprus finalized the construction of a new state-owned petroleum storage terminal at the Vassiliko Energy Center. The project, which cost over €50 million, was officially highlighted by Minister of Energy Michalis Damianos during the 23rd Annual General Meeting of the Cyprus Organization for the Storage and Management of Oil Stocks (KODAP) in September 2026.

The new facility features seven dedicated tanks that now house the majority of the organization's proprietary reserves. According to Minister Damianos, this infrastructure is a critical investment in the country's energy security and resilience. It allows for the immediate distribution of fuel in the event of supply chain disruptions while significantly reducing operational costs previously spent on renting storage space from third parties.

The development comes amidst rising geopolitical instability and ongoing hostilities in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East, which have heightened the need for reliable strategic reserves. The completion of this terminal marks a strategic shift for Cyprus, ensuring the nation maintains sufficient oil stocks to meet internal consumption demands during potential crises.
