Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico accuses Western leaders of inciting NATO-Russia conflict

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, known for his pro-Kremlin stance, sparked controversy on September 21, 2026, by accusing Western politicians of attempting to provoke a direct military conflict between NATO and Russia. In a video statement posted on Facebook, Fico claimed that because the strategy to defeat Russia via the war in Ukraine has allegedly failed, Western leaders are now seeking alternative ways to engage the alliance in a broader war.

Fico, who is currently the only European Union head of government maintaining close ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin, stated that he opposes Slovakia's involvement in any armed conflict triggered by Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.
