Moscow refinery suspends production following drone strike

The Gazprom Neft-owned Moscow refinery, Russia's largest, has suspended all crude oil processing following a significant drone attack on September 20, 2026. Industry sources report that the facility's two primary crude distillation units were set ablaze after drones crashed into the site. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed via Telegram that an industrial unit within the complex sustained damage during the assault.

The refinery's operations have been severely crippled, as the damaged AVT-6 unit accounts for approximately 53-54% of total capacity with 21,400 metric tons per day, while the EURO+ unit handles the remaining 18,800 tons. Since the attack, fuel from the refinery has not been offered on the St. Petersburg International Mercantile Exchange. Experts suggest that repair work and the restoration of normal production levels will likely take several weeks to complete.

In 2024, the refinery processed roughly 11.6 million tons of crude oil, averaging 230,000 barrels per day. The facility serves as a critical node in Russia's domestic fuel supply chain. Gazprom Neft has not issued an immediate formal response regarding the full extent of the operational downtime or repair timelines.
