President Christodoulides holds meetings in New York on Cyprus issue and regional stability

President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides arrived in New York to attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly. On September 21, 2026, he met with King Abdullah II of Jordan to discuss the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, regional security, and the strengthening of bilateral ties, including a joint initiative for a regional firefighting center. The leaders also explored the deepening of cooperation between the European Union and Jordan based on their 2025 strategic partnership.

Regarding the Cyprus issue, President Christodoulides engaged in informal diplomatic discussions, expressing readiness to support UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The objective is to secure the resumption of negotiations from the point where they were interrupted at Crans-Montana through an expanded conference. The President emphasized that current behind-the-scenes contacts are indicative of the UN's commitment to finding a viable solution.

Moving forward, the President's schedule includes critical meetings with the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy Maria Angela Holguin, UK Prime Minister Andrew Burnham, and representatives from energy giants Chevron and ExxonMobil. A pivotal meeting with Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is scheduled for Thursday, while the President is expected to address the UN General Assembly plenary on Wednesday, September 23.
