Ethics committee launches investigation into VAR interference during APOEL vs. AEL match

The Cyprus Ethics and Sports Protection Committee has launched an official investigation into allegations of unauthorized external interference with the VAR system during the recent match between APOEL and AEL Limassol. The inquiry was initiated following a formal complaint by AEL and a subsequent investigation by the Cyprus Football Association (CFA), which reportedly confirmed procedural irregularities. AEL has now filed a formal report with the Cyprus Police, requesting a thorough investigation into whether this external influence constituted match manipulation.

While AEL focuses on the technical integrity of the VAR process, the club is also seeking to appeal the disciplinary suspension of their player, Kafou, who was sent off during the match. APOEL, however, has publicly criticized AEL’s stance, arguing that Kafou’s disciplinary action was justified due to the player spitting on an opponent and abusing the referee. APOEL maintains that their club should not be linked to match-fixing allegations and has reiterated a proposal for a comprehensive meeting of all football clubs to address systemic issues in Cypriot football.

The Ethics Committee inquiry is expected to last three months, with the possibility of an extension. The investigator may request access to VAR audio recordings and will call upon relevant witnesses to determine if any criminal or disciplinary offenses occurred.
