School bus service suspensions in Anafotia lead to community protests

Repeated cancellations of school bus routes in Anafotia have left many students without transportation to their schools. The transport authorities justify these suspensions by citing chronic vandalism and disruptive behavior, including the destruction of bus seats, the use of fireworks, and the release of foul-smelling substances by students. This situation has created a recurring obstacle for pupils from the first year of middle school through to the third year of high school.

Stavros Karagiorgis, the President of the Anafotia Community Council, stated he met with the Minister of Education on Friday, September 18, 2026, to discuss the crisis. Despite assurances that services would resume by Monday, September 21, students remained stranded. Karagiorgis criticized the disruption of the children's education and warned that the community will resort to dynamic measures if reliable transport is not restored immediately.

While officials frame the issue as a security response to vandalism, community representatives highlight that this problem has been ignored for decades. The transport authorities continue to investigate the incidents as they struggle to maintain safe conditions for both drivers and passengers on student routes.
