Democratic Rally prepares for 2028 presidential election

Following the 2026 parliamentary elections, the Democratic Rally (DISY) in Cyprus has begun its strategic preparations for the 2028 presidential race. Party leadership emphasizes that despite recent electoral progress, the upcoming contest requires a distinct approach, different alliances, and a focus on broader audiences to remain competitive against rival forces, particularly AKEL, which remains a significant political opponent.

The party faces internal challenges regarding its stance toward incumbent President Nikos Christodoulides. While party leader Annita Demetriou has formally stated that DISY will field its own candidate and will not support the President, current polling data suggests internal divisions. An IMR survey indicates that 58% of DISY members favor an autonomous party candidacy, yet 26% still express support for a potential second term for Christodoulides. This reflects broader dissatisfaction within the center-right base regarding the administration's performance, coupled with a lack of definitive rupture with the current leadership.

Moving forward, DISY aims to convince its base that an alternative direction is necessary for the country's future. The party is tasked with balancing the management of government criticism while formulating a cohesive platform that appeals to voters who are disappointed by the current administration yet remain hesitant to fully break ties with the incumbent.
