Cyprus, Greece, and Israel announce new storm naming list for 2026-2027

Cyprus, in collaboration with the National Meteorological Services of Greece and Israel, has finalized a new list of names for extreme weather phenomena for the period between October 2026 and September 2027. This initiative, part of the Eastern Mediterranean Group established in 2021, aims to standardize the naming of meteorological systems that pose significant threats during both cold and warm seasons.

Cyprus contributed nine specific names to the collaborative list: Argos, Dorothea, Glafkos, Jason, Morfeas, Persefoni, Sisyfos, Vergina, and Ypnos. The participating meteorological services maintain ongoing communication via their respective forecasting centers, conducting weekly meetings—or more frequent sessions when necessary—to evaluate numerical weather models and observational data to ensure precise tracking and naming of incoming storms.
