Eastern Mediterranean countries release 2026-2027 storm naming list

The national meteorological services of Greece, Cyprus, and Israel have released their joint list of names for extreme weather systems expected to impact the Eastern Mediterranean from October 2026 through September 2027. This initiative, which began in 2021, aims to standardize the naming of severe weather phenomena, ensuring timely and consistent public warnings across the region during both warm and cold seasons.

The list, which utilizes 24 names displayed in Latin characters to reflect the linguistic identities of the three nations, includes: Argos, Bar, Chabrias, Dorothea, Eitan, Filippa, Glafkos, Hadar, Ikaros, Jason, Kedem, Laskarina, Morfeas, Nadia, Odysseas, Persefoni, Roxani, Sisyfos, Tamar, Uranos, Vergina, Wasim, Xanthe, and Ypnos. While the Cyprus Times report mentions a 25th name, Zohar, the majority of sources consistently list these 24 names.

These designations are assigned alphabetically when a system is forecasted to cause significant impact in at least one of the participating countries. The naming protocol remains consistent as storms track across the region, facilitating coordination between neighboring national services and ensuring that the public receives clear, unified information regarding weather hazards.
