Eastern Mediterranean meteorological services announce storm naming list for 2026-2027

The national meteorological services of Greece, Cyprus, and Israel have released the list of names for severe weather systems expected to affect the Eastern Mediterranean between October 2026 and September 2027. This initiative, part of the Eastern Mediterranean Group established in 2021, aims to standardize the naming process for storms throughout the cold and warm seasons to ensure consistent public communication.

The final list consists of 24 names presented in alphabetical order: Argos, Bar, Chabrias, Dorothea, Eitan, Filippa, Glafkos, Hadar, Ikaros, Jason, Kedem, Laskarina, Morfeas, Nadia, Odysseas, Persefoni, Roxani, Sisyfos, Tamar, Uranos, Vergina, Wasim, Xanthe, and Ypnos. Cyprus specifically contributed nine of these names, including Argos, Dorothea, Glafkos, Jason, Morfeas, Persefoni, Sisyfos, Vergina, and Ypnos.

This cooperation operates under the broader EUMETNET framework, which encourages regional meteorological coordination to improve early warning systems. The participating national centers engage in weekly meetings, or more frequent sessions if necessary, to review numerical weather models and observational data to determine when a weather system warrants an official name.
