President Christodoulides addresses multilateralism and the Cyprus issue in New York

During the third week of September 2026, President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides participated in the High-Level Summit on Multilateralism, International Law, Peace and Prosperity in New York. The event was convened on September 21 by European Council President António Costa, Kenyan President William Ruto, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. In his address, Christodoulides emphasized that adherence to the UN Charter and international law is critical for regional security, particularly given the ongoing consequences of the Turkish invasion and military occupation of Cyprus.

Discussions in New York have also focused on Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) aimed at resuming negotiations. Reports indicate that progress remains limited due to conflicting approaches: while the Republic of Cyprus views CBMs as a bridge toward substantive peace talks, local observers argue that the Turkish side selectively promotes measures that serve its own interests while rejecting proposals such as the opening of new checkpoints that would facilitate daily life for both Greek and Turkish Cypriots. Despite fifty-two years of diplomatic efforts and numerous UN resolutions, a final settlement for reunification remains elusive as the international community continues to balance geopolitical uncertainties.
