Britain to provide aerial refueling support to Saudi Arabia

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced on September 21, 2026, that the United Kingdom will provide military logistical support to Saudi Arabia to help defend against ongoing attacks by the Houthi movement. Starting in the coming days, a Royal Air Force Voyager aircraft operating from RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus will conduct defensive air-to-air refueling for Saudi fighter jets. This assistance is expected to last for several weeks and will be subject to continuous review by British officials.

The mission follows a formal request from Riyadh for aid in countering drone and missile strikes, which have recently targeted Saudi energy infrastructure, including sites in Yanbu and the East-West pipeline. Prime Minister Burnham and Defence Secretary Luke Pollard emphasized that the deployment is strictly defensive and intended solely to support interception operations, explicitly stating that British assets will not participate in offensive strikes against Houthi targets. France also indicated a readiness to support the security of Saudi energy infrastructure within a defensive framework, while clarifying it will not participate in the conflict. The British involvement builds upon previous security measures, including the existing deployment of the Sky Sabre air defense system in the kingdom. RAF Akrotiri, which serves as the launch point, previously sustained minor damage from a drone strike in March 2026.
