France and the UK bolster Saudi defense against Houthi attacks

On September 21, 2026, the United Kingdom and France announced measures to assist Saudi Arabia in defending its energy infrastructure against repeated attacks from the Ansar Allah movement, also known as the Houthis. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham confirmed that the UK has agreed to provide logistical military support, specifically aerial refueling for Saudi fighter jets engaged in defensive patrols, following a formal request from Riyadh. The operation will involve Royal Air Force Voyager tanker aircraft operating out of RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus and is expected to last several weeks, with the scope under constant review. In addition to these air operations, Britain has already deployed its Sky Sabre air defense system to the kingdom.

Simultaneously, a diplomatic source stated that France is prepared to contribute to the security of critical Saudi energy infrastructure, specifically in Yanbu and along the East-West pipeline corridor. Both nations have emphasized that their involvement is strictly defensive and does not signify direct participation in the conflict against the Houthi movement. These measures come in response to frequent drone and missile strikes that have targeted Saudi Aramco facilities and forced the shutdown of the East-West pipeline. The situation remains volatile, with Riyadh attributing some of these attacks to drone launches originating from Iraq.
