Venice considers increasing entry fee for day-trippers to combat overtourism

Venice city officials are planning to significantly increase the entry fee for day-trippers in 2027 to address persistent overtourism. Michele Zuin, the city official responsible for budget and taxation, stated that the current entry fee of 5 to 10 euros has failed to act as a sufficient deterrent. Proposals currently under discussion include raising the daily maximum charge to 30 euros, though officials had initially explored figures as high as 50 euros. Any final adjustments must be coordinated with the Italian national government.

The entry fee system was first introduced in 2024 as a global pilot program for visitors who do not stay overnight in the city. In 2026, the measure was enforced on specific dates between April 3 and July 26, yielding more than 5.2 million euros from approximately 680,000 registered entries. Existing policies provide discounted rates for early bookings and exemptions for certain groups, such as children under 14. The municipal authority now aims to extend the duration of the measure throughout the calendar year to maximize its effectiveness. Ongoing deliberations continue as the city seeks to refine the program for the upcoming 2027 season.
