Trial of suspended Paphos mayor Phedon Phedonos continues

The trial of the suspended mayor of Paphos, Phedon Phedonos, resumed on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at the Paphos Criminal Court. The proceedings, which have been ongoing since late July, are being held behind closed doors following a successful request from the prosecution. Phedonos faces five serious criminal charges, including rape, indecent assault, assault causing actual bodily harm, and the administration of substances to reduce resistance. The defendant has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Since the trial began, more than ten prosecution witnesses have testified, including police investigators and forensic experts. Recent sessions have focused on testimony from colleagues of the complainant. Alongside the criminal trial, a separate legal process is evaluating the legality of the mayor's current suspended status. The court has scheduled further hearings for September 29 and October 6, 2026, as the prosecution continues to present its evidence against Phedonos.
