Irish athletes urge national football team to boycott Israel matches

More than 160 Irish athletes have signed an open letter calling on the national football team to boycott upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Israel. The initiative, organized by the group Irish Sport for Palestine, includes notable figures such as Olympian Ciara Mageean, former footballer Louise Quinn, rugby player Tony Ward, and boxers Tyrone McKenna and Eric Donovan.

The two matches are scheduled to take place in neutral venues behind closed doors—on September 27 in Hungary and October 4 in Serbia. These arrangements follow widespread public reaction to Palestinian civilian casualties during the conflict in Gaza. Proponents of the boycott argue that the national team has a unique opportunity to use the platform of sport to send a significant moral message by refusing to participate.

While the request has put substantial pressure on Irish sports governing bodies, there has been no official statement yet regarding a formal change in the match schedule.
