National and Kapodistrian University of Athens opens Cyprus branch in Nicosia

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) officially launched its Cyprus branch in Nicosia on Monday, September 21, 2026, marking the beginning of the 2026-2027 academic year. The inaugural ceremony welcomed the first cohort of students, signaling a historic step toward the internationalization of Greek higher education and the strengthening of academic ties between Greece and Cyprus.

The event was attended by high-ranking officials, including NKUA Rector Gerasimos Siassos, Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos, and the Dean of the School of Health Sciences, Professor P. Lagiou. Faculty leadership, including professors N. Arkadopoulos, T. Babalis, and K. Tsioufis, committed to supporting the new students throughout their academic journey. The Medical School additionally held a traditional white coat ceremony to symbolize the students' formal entry into medical training.

Currently, the campus has commenced operations with the Medical School and the Department of Primary Education. The university anticipates that departments of Psychology and Economics will follow shortly. This academic expansion is part of a broader urban revitalization strategy, aiming to bring consistent daily activity to Nicosia's historic center through the establishment of educational infrastructure and student housing.
