Cyprus tourism sector recovers from regional instability

Cyprus expects its tourism industry to finish 2026 with an overall decline of approximately 5 per cent compared to 2025 figures. According to Tourism Deputy Minister Kostas Koumis, the sector saw 2,820,649 arrivals between January and August, a 7 per cent decrease year-on-year. This marks a slight recovery from the first seven months of the year, when the decline stood at 8 per cent.

The industry began the year with record-breaking results in January and February. However, the situation deteriorated sharply in March following the onset of regional conflict, which led to the indefinite cancellation of approximately 70 per cent of flight programmes to and from the island. This instability caused a drop in tourism of roughly 18 per cent during the first four months of 2026. Koumis attributed the subsequent mitigation of these losses to concerted government efforts and improved coordination with airlines and travel agencies.

The Deputy Ministry continues to monitor the situation as the year concludes. While the initial forecast for early 2026 was highly optimistic due to the record-breaking start, the government is now focused on stabilizing the sector following the mid-year crisis.
