Student bus services resume in Nicosia and Larnaca after vandalism disputes

School bus services in Nicosia and Larnaca resumed on September 23, 2026, following a temporary suspension caused by vandalism and safety concerns. The interruption, which drew strong criticism from parents for being communicated at short notice, left many students stranded and prompted potential threats of protests from affected communities.

Following intensive negotiations held on September 22, the Ministry of Transport, Education officials, and representatives from the Cyprus Public Transport (CPT) and parent associations reached an agreement to restore the routes. To ensure the safety of students and drivers, authorities have implemented immediate security measures, including the deployment of security guards and inspectors on board. Furthermore, only buses equipped with closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems are being utilized to monitor and deter future misconduct.

Additional meetings are scheduled to finalize long-term solutions, with a broader consultation involving parents planned for the coming days to maintain oversight and ensure the consistent operation of student transportation services.
