Children envision greener streets during Laou Laou initiative in Nicosia

On September 20, 2026, the Ayioi Omoloyites neighborhood in Nicosia hosted an event titled 'Our street needs green!' as part of the European Mobility Week and the Laou Laou Open Streets initiative. The activity, organized under the European Climate Pact, encouraged children to act as urban planners to reimagine their local environment.

Coordinated by Cyprus European Climate Pact ambassador Eirini Andreou, the event invited children to use a large neighborhood map and recyclable materials, including modeling clay, to redesign 'grey' streets. The participants proposed adding more trees, greenery, pedestrian pathways, benches, and dedicated play areas to make the neighborhood more accessible and welcoming. This initiative sought to foster broader discussions about the future of public spaces and how urban environments can be better tailored to meet the needs of their residents.
