During World War II, Cyprus, then under British administration, became a strategic target for Axis forces due to its vital role in supporting Allied operations in the Middle East and North Africa. The island endured multiple air raids by Italian and German aircraft, which primarily struck military facilities, airfields, ports, and critical infrastructure, although civilian areas were also impacted.

Following the fall of Crete in 1941, concerns regarding a potential ground invasion of Cyprus intensified.
