Parents protest as Limassol Olympic swimming pool remains closed following storm damage

The Olympic Swimming Pool in Dasoudi, Limassol, has been non-operational since August 30 due to severe damage caused by a recent storm. The extreme weather led to the rupture of a central pipe, resulting in the flooding of the facility's underground machine room and extensive damage to critical electromechanical systems, piping, and structural supports.

In response to the prolonged closure, parents of young athletes organized a protest on the morning of September 23. They expressed frustration over a lack of clear communication and the negative impact of the closure on their children, who have been forced to relocate training sessions to the smaller, overcrowded Tsirio Stadium pool. Families report that late-night training sessions, ending as late as 22:40, disrupt the children's sleep and school performance, leading some to cease training entirely.

The Cyprus Sports Organization (KOA) has officially responded to the concerns, confirming the technical complexity of the damage and the necessity of thorough safety testing before reopening. The organization estimates that restoration works will be completed in approximately six weeks, during which time they have requested patience and understanding from the affected sports community.
