Nicosia Criminal Court denies document disclosure in Central Prisons case

The Permanent Criminal Court of Nicosia rejected a defense request for the disclosure of certain documents and electronic records regarding the ongoing criminal prosecution of former Central Prisons director Anna Aristotelous and seven other individuals. The court ruled on Tuesday that the Prosecution Authority’s decision to withhold these materials is a necessary measure to protect the public interest, concluding that there is no basis to issue an order for their production. The case centers on prison-related documents discovered at the residence of a prison guard.

During the proceedings, defense attorney Christos Triantafyllidis signaled that he would challenge the fairness of the upcoming trial if the Prosecution continues to be represented by Senior Counsel of the Republic Vassilis Bissas. In response, Bissas confirmed his intention to remain the prosecutor for the case. The court scheduled the next hearing for Tuesday, September 29, at 9:30 a.m. In addition to Aristotelous, the defendants include former deputy director Athena Dimitriou and five other staff members who are facing legal proceedings in connection with the scandal.
