Nicosia Parliamentary Committee to discuss Archbishop Makarios Avenue status

The House Parliamentary Committee on Transport is scheduled to hold a meeting on Thursday, September 24, 2026, to discuss the ongoing issues regarding Archbishop Makarios Avenue in Nicosia. The session, beginning at 11:45 a.m., will address two primary matters: the potential one-way conversion of the avenue and the broader implications of its current operational state for local businesses, residents, and traffic flow.

The committee will review a proposal for one-way traffic registration, a topic initiated by MP Fotini Tsiridou. Simultaneously, lawmakers Sotiris Ioannou and Andreas Papacharalambous have introduced a discussion regarding the consequences of the avenue's configuration on the capital's traffic and the economic viability of businesses in the area. This issue has been a subject of long-standing public debate, with previous parliamentary interest dating back four years through initial motions by former MP Harris Georgiades and Tsiridou.

Authorities have been invited to testify, including the Mayor of Nicosia, the Chief of Police, the Auditor General, and representatives from the Cyprus Public Transport authority, as well as various professional, environmental, and residential groups.
