United Nations General Assembly 81st session begins in New York

The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly officially began in New York, with the high-level general debate scheduled to run from September 22 to September 28, 2026. This annual diplomatic event brings together heads of state and senior representatives from all 193 UN member nations to discuss global issues including peace, security, climate change, and human rights.

President Nikos Christodoulides is attending the summit on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus. For Cyprus, the session serves as a vital venue to engage in international diplomacy and address the ongoing Cyprus issue. The General Assembly, established in 1945, functions as the primary deliberative and policy-making organ of the UN, where every member state holds one equal vote regardless of size or influence.
