Belgian authorities revoke arrest warrant for Dimitris Avramopoulos

On September 22, 2026, it was confirmed that Belgian judicial authorities have revoked the European arrest warrant issued against New Democracy Member of Parliament and former European Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos. Following the withdrawal of this warrant, the Athens Court of Appeals has closed the corresponding file and moved to archive the case, as the legal grounds for execution in Greece have been eliminated.

The development occurred after Avramopoulos voluntarily appeared before Belgian judicial authorities in Brussels to testify regarding the ongoing Qatargate investigation. During his appearance, he provided information and clarifications to the investigators, maintaining that his past involvement with the organization Fight Impunity was purely honorary, pre-approved by the European Commission, and fully compliant with tax regulations.

Prior to this resolution, the Greek Parliament had voted to lift the parliamentary immunity of Avramopoulos upon the recommendation of the Ethics Committee and with the politician's own consent. However, the lifting of immunity became moot once the underlying Belgian warrant was cancelled. The case is now considered closed by the Greek authorities, and no further action is expected regarding the execution of the warrant.
