Cyprus parliamentary committee discusses EU strategic priorities and France defense agreement

On September 22, 2026, the Cypriot Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs held a session to examine the Republic of Cyprus's strategic role as an EU frontline state in the Eastern Mediterranean. Chaired by DISY MP George Karoullas, the meeting focused on both diplomatic initiatives and a proposed Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) with France.

Foreign Ministry officials, including Middle East department head Andrea Petranyi and security official Petros Mavrikios, highlighted Cyprus’s ongoing efforts to act as a bridge between the EU and the Middle East, citing recent diplomatic engagements at the UN General Assembly and earlier regional summits. The discussion on the SOFA agreement, supported by Defense Ministry representative Lieutenant Colonel Panicos Papagriyoriou, centered on establishing a legal framework for the presence of French military forces on the island. The agreement aims to enhance national deterrence, improve interoperability between armed forces, and facilitate the sharing of defense expertise.

During the session, MEPs Costas Mavrides and Fidias Panayiotou participated in the debate, with Panayiotou specifically raising concerns regarding potential future issues linked to electrical interconnection projects. The committee continues its review of the international agreement, emphasizing that such partnerships must yield concrete security benefits for the Republic of Cyprus.
