Cyprus parliamentary committee discusses strategic priorities and regional role

On Tuesday, September 22, 2026, the parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee of the Republic of Cyprus held a session to examine the nation's strategic priorities and its role as an EU frontline state in the Eastern Mediterranean. The meeting was attended by Members of the European Parliament Costas Mavrides (DIKO) and Fidias Panayiotou (Direct Democracy).

During the session, Andrea Petranyi, Head of the Middle East Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, highlighted Cyprus's diplomatic efforts, including the informal summit held in Nicosia last April which hosted five regional leaders. The ministry also noted ongoing diplomatic activity during the UN General Assembly in New York this week, involving President Nikos Christodoulides and Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos. The committee discussed Cyprus's position as a bridge between the EU and the region.

While the meeting focused on broad strategic priorities, MEP Fidias Panayiotou reportedly raised concerns regarding future risks associated with electrical interconnection projects. Representatives from the Ministry of Defense, including Lieutenant Colonel Panikos Papagrigoriou, also participated in the proceedings to address defense diplomacy aspects.
