Greek Prime Minister addresses the UN General Assembly in New York

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the United States for the 81st UN General Assembly, arriving on September 21, 2026. During his visit, he met with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to discuss critical regional issues, including the Cyprus conflict, the war in Ukraine, and stability in the Middle East. Mitsotakis also held a bilateral meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to strengthen energy security and regional cooperation, leading to plans for a future trilateral summit involving Cyprus.

In his address to the General Assembly, Mitsotakis described the 52-year-old Cyprus issue as a litmus test for the credibility of the United Nations. He reaffirmed Greece's commitment to the UN-led process for the island's reunification, free of occupation forces. Regarding relations with Turkey, the Prime Minister emphasized that while Greece seeks dialogue, it will not tolerate threats or violations of international law, specifically citing the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) as the required framework for resolving maritime disputes.

Mitsotakis also highlighted Greece's economic recovery, noting that the national unemployment rate has dropped from 18% in 2019 to below 8%, with 600,000 new jobs created. He reaffirmed his government's commitment to maintaining fiscal discipline while addressing the cost of living for citizens, positioning Greece as a stable regional bridge-builder.
