Fuel prices surge across Cyprus and the European Union

On Monday, September 21, 2026, diesel prices at several petrol stations in Paphos and Nicosia exceeded 2 euros per liter. According to the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Cyprus, the minimum price in the country is 1.865 euros, with an average of 1.946 euros and a maximum reaching 2.039 euros per liter.

Data from Eurostat for August indicates that gasoline prices in Cyprus rose by 6.2% compared to July, ranking as the fourth-highest increase in the European Union, following Spain, Romania, and Italy. Diesel fuel experienced an even sharper upward trend, with prices rising across 26 out of 27 EU member states. Across the union, the average price for motor fuel and lubricants in August 2026 was 23.8% higher compared to the previous year. European Commission data shows that between February 23 and September 14, diesel prices surged by 34.4%, while gasoline costs increased by 24.1%.

Fuel costs on the island have remained high despite a reduced excise tax, which the government has extended through the end of November. In the first half of the year alone, residents reportedly paid over 23 million euros in additional fuel costs.
