Audit report reveals inefficiencies in Cyprus National Guard catering

A 2026 Audit Office report reveals significant inefficiencies and mismanagement in the catering services for the Cyprus National Guard during 2025. Despite an expenditure of over €9.5 million, the report highlights that 67% of soldiers express dissatisfaction with their meals. The audit, based on 1,106 questionnaires and field inspections, indicates that 69% of personnel frequently rely on canteen products, while 41% source food outside military camps. Low satisfaction scores were particularly noted for breakfast items and beverages.

Financial mismanagement was also identified, with the report noting that ordering excesses lead to a waste of approximately €10,000 per week, totaling €520,000 annually. Furthermore, only 20% of soldiers with special dietary requirements reported adequate meal provision. These deficiencies in food quality and distribution are cited as factors negatively impacting both the living conditions of the troops and the operational readiness of the National Guard.

The Audit Office emphasized the need for systemic improvements, noting that while unit kitchens show slightly higher satisfaction rates (59.6%) compared to frozen or pre-prepared meals, the overall process requires urgent review to ensure rational use of public funds and better support for the soldiers' needs.
