Expert witness testifies in Maradona death trial

The trial regarding the death of Diego Maradona in Buenos Aires has concluded its testimony phase following a controversial appearance by forensic expert Pablo Ferrari. Testifying for the defense of neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, Ferrari challenged the prosecution's theory that the football legend suffered through a prolonged period of agony before his death on November 25, 2020. According to Ferrari, the event was sudden, with a period of agony lasting only minutes to a few hours at most, and he suggested that Covid-19 cannot be ruled out as a potential contributing factor.

This testimony stands in direct opposition to the prosecution’s narrative, which maintains that Maradona experienced an extended period of distress due to inadequate medical care. Seven healthcare professionals, including doctors and nurses, are currently facing charges of potential fatal negligence for their conduct during the former star's home recovery. The court in San Isidro is now reviewing these conflicting medical assessments, with further legal proceedings expected in the coming weeks to determine the liability of the accused staff.
