University of Nicosia Medical School establishes memorial lecture for Dr. Nikos Ioannou

The University of Nicosia (UNIC) Medical School has announced the establishment of the annual Nikos Ioannou Memorial Lecture, honoring the late orthopaedic surgeon who played a pivotal role in the development of healthcare services in Cyprus. The lecture series, supported by the Ioannou family, serves to commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Nikos Ioannou, who served as President of the Pancyprian Medical Association and passed away on June 26, 2025, at the age of 88.

The inaugural lecture is scheduled to take place on Monday, October 5, 2026, at 18:00 in Discovery Hall at the University of Nicosia. The keynote address, titled “The Rise and Fall of Liver Cancer”, will be delivered in English by the late doctor’s son, Professor George N. Ioannou, who is the Director of Hepatology at the Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System and a Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington. During the session, Professor Ioannou will examine shifting trends in the incidence of liver cancer, as well as current medical advancements in prevention and management strategies for the disease.
