University of Nicosia Medical School establishes memorial lecture for Dr. Nikos Ioannou

The University of Nicosia (UNIC) Medical School has announced the establishment of the annual Nikos Ioannou Memorial Lecture, a series dedicated to the late orthopaedic surgeon who played a pivotal role in the development of Cyprus' healthcare system. The inaugural event is scheduled for Monday, October 5, 2026, at 6:00 p.m., and will be held at the Discovery Hall on the university campus.

Dr. Nikos Ioannou, a former President of the Pancyprian Medical Association, passed away on June 26, 2025, at the age of 88. To honor his legacy, his family is supporting this initiative. The first lecture, titled “The Rise and Fall of Liver Cancer,” will be delivered in English by his son, Professor George N. Ioannou. Professor Ioannou serves as the Director of Hepatology at the Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System and is a Professor of Medicine at the University of Washington. The lecture will address modern shifts in the incidence of liver cancer, focusing specifically on contemporary management and preventative strategies.
