Escalating Russian drone strikes cause casualties in Kyiv and Odesa

During the week of September 23–26, 2026, Russia launched intensified drone attacks against Ukrainian infrastructure, targeting Kyiv, Odesa, and Reni. In an attack on the night of September 23, a merchant ship flying the Antigua and Barbuda flag was struck in the Black Sea, resulting in the death of its captain. Ukrainian officials stated the ship was civilian, while the Russian Defense Ministry claimed the vessel carried military goods. By September 26, the death toll from the ongoing aerial campaign rose to at least eight people, including a 14-year-old boy, with dozens more injured across Kyiv and Odesa. The attacks further targeted the Ukrainian defense industry, supply centers, and port facilities on the Danube River. Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged potential proposals for peace talks but noted that Moscow's response would be influenced by recent Ukrainian drone strikes against the Moscow region on September 20. Medical evacuations have been reported in Zaporizhzhia due to the deteriorating security situation.
