Russian strikes hit commercial vessel and port infrastructure in Odesa

Overnight between September 22 and 23, 2026, Russian forces launched drone attacks targeting Odesa region, hitting a merchant vessel flying the flag of Antigua and Barbuda. Ukrainian port authorities and regional governor Oleh Kiper confirmed that the strike killed the Ukrainian captain, ignited a fire on the ship that was subsequently extinguished, and forced the crew to evacuate. Russian forces also struck civilian port infrastructure, damaging warehouses storing food, medical supplies, and household goods.

The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed its night operations targeted Ukrainian defense and energy facilities, logistics centers, and military-related vessels. While Ukraine labels the incident a terrorist act against civilian navigation, the Russian side later alleged on September 25 that the targeted vessel was carrying military and dual-use cargo. Since the start of the conflict in February 2022, the Turkish Chamber of Shipping reports that at least 226 commercial and civilian vessels have been damaged in the Black Sea. Increased Russian attacks over the past year have severely disrupted Ukrainian exports, impacting the nation's economy significantly.
