Nicosia merchants demand mayor's resignation over urban development projects

A committee representing shopkeepers, residents, and small business owners in the historic center of Nicosia officially demanded the resignation of Mayor Charalambos Prountzos on September 23, 2026. The group alleges that the municipal administration has mishandled public consultations regarding the redevelopment of pedestrian areas and accused the mayor of using public funds to hire the consultancy firm PWC to advance interests that conflict with local businesses.

The conflict centers on urban planning, including the proposed conversion of the southern section of Makarios Avenue into a one-way street and the development of student residences in the city center. Merchants argue these projects are detrimental to the area and claim the mayor is spreading propaganda to justify the changes. Meanwhile, Mayor Prountzos recently briefed a delegation from the DISY party, noting that the municipality requires at least 35 million euros to meet real needs, while only receiving 22.5 million euros in state grants. He continues to advocate for major developments at the Sopaz industrial area and the old state fair grounds.

The Nicosia Municipality has formally rejected the committee's accusations, labeling them as inaccurate and personal attacks. Members of the representative committee are scheduled to attend a meeting of the parliamentary Transport Committee this Thursday to discuss the Makarios Avenue traffic arrangements and the broader implications of the proposed urban changes.
